Euphoniums & Baritones

Solo Euphonium

Matthew Rowe

Matt joined the band in 2004 at the ripe old age of 9. His most memorable banding moment was winning at Torquay at the SWBBA contest on the test piece 'Frontier'. Matt's dad, Richard is our principal cornet and his mum is the band's treasurer. Matt has played for the Camborne training band in the past when he was playing Cornet. He currently also plays Euphonium for the Cornwall Youth Brass Band. Matt's favourite test piece is Music of the Spheres and favourite concert piece is Innuendo. Matt's future plans include going to uni. to train as a teacher. In his spare time he enjoys playing basketball and football.

2nd Euphonium

Steve Coad

Steve started playing in 1971 at the age of 11 and played with St Agnes Junior and Senior bands, and Cornwall Youth Band. In 1976 he joined the Army and played euphonium in the Light Infantry for 8 years, alongside Kenwyn Tonkin and Shaun Jenkin (both current Lanner Band members). Upon leaving the army Steve played at Carharrack and St Day Band, where he met his wife Karen. He has also played in Redruth Band and Kernow Concert Band. Steve works as the Director of a charity called the Freshfields Service, who help people with drug problems. His main interests outside of banding are his family (two grown up children) and motorbikes. Steve is very pleased to be joining Lanner Band at this exciting time in its development.

1st Baritone

Paula Chappell

Paula first learned to play trumpet at the age of 7 under John Ridgeon.  After joining her first brass band at the age of 9 she has been unable to wean herself off since then.  Paula has played (to varying degrees of success) flugel, horn, trombone, euphonium and Eb Bass but has settled on the finest instrument in the band - baritone!

2nd Baritone

Jeremy Gilbert

Jeremy joined the band around 1990. He started playing at the tender age of 9 with the Penryn School Band, then progressed onto the senior wing of the band, Saracen Brass. He then moved to Redruth Town under the direction of Derek Johnson. During the day Jeremy is a Specialist Nurse at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. In his spare time he likes spending time with his wife and two sons Sam and Tom. Jeremy's favourite piece of music is Resurgam. He is presently Band Secretary, General Secretary, a Trustee of the Band and also a Life Member
