Basses

  1. EEb Bass – Mark Bray

Mark’s first love at the tender age of 6 was the tenor horn with Carharrack & St.Day band in 1977, where after 6 months he then moved for the first time to Lanner & District Silver Band under the direction of Ken Hamlod and then Jim Richards.

A move to the Championship section or first section as it was known back in the mid 80’s saw him join Redruth Town Band under MD Leonard Adams on solo horn. Following Mr Adams in 1988 Mark then moved to Bodmin Town Band still on tenor horn where he met his wife Elaine who currently plays 2nd horn with Lanner.

After moving onto baritone for a short period and then onto Euphonium with Bodmin Mark enjoyed playing under some great conductors like Leonard Adams, Howard Taylor, Major Peter Parkes, Prof. Nicholas Childs, Richard Evans, Derek Broadbent, Derek Greenwood, Philip Harper, Russell Gray and Andrew Duncan to name but a few where he gained some valuable experience over the years. Some memorable highlights for Mark were appearing at the Royal Albert Hall in the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain on 6 occasions, Numerous appearances at the Grand Shield and England Masters contests, not to mention taking part in prestigious concerts in Norway and Holland.

Other bands that Mark had many good playing adventures with were Mount Charles and Camborne Town. Mark made the move back to his roots with Lanner band in 2013 and from Euphonium to EEb bass in 2016 and is loving every minute of it. During the day Mark works at one of the country’s top music shops, Trevada Music.

Jason (Gormo) started playing at the age of 9 in St Ives Band.  After stints with the St Ia Brass Ensemble, Hayle Town Band and Camborne Youth Band, at the age of 16 he joined Camborne Town Band and was there for 20 years.  During those years he enjoyed many contest successes including playing at the Royal Albert Hall on many occasions, hat-tricks at Bugle band contest, touring in France with Brenda Wootten as well as other European concerts.

Whilst at Camborne he played under conductors such as Derek Greenwood, Leonard Adams, Richard Evans, Frank Renton, Gary Cutt, David Hamilton to name but a few. As well playing in Camborne Band, Jason was also a member of the Cornwall Youth Brass Band and whilst helping out in 1993 on tour in Austria, Jason met Tracey.  In 2011 their children joined Lanner Brass Academy at the start of their musical journey and since then have progressed and so now all four family members are full time players in the senior band.
