Lanner and District Silver Band surface in triumph from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea – Torquay 2026
Last weekend saw 75 bands gather to compete at the West of England Regional Championships.
Taking to the stage in Torquay, Lanner and District Silver Band delivered a commanding and atmospheric performance of Philip Harper’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, battling through fierce competition (and a few imaginary sea creatures along the way) to be crowned Second Section Champions.
This success secures their place at the National Finals of Great Britain later this year.
At the helm was Musical Director Stuart Chappell, recently returned to the band, who said: “The band got everything they deserved. They have worked incredibly hard and are a fantastic team — and that’s what brings success.”
Band Chairman Jeremy Gilbert added:
“We’re incredibly grateful to Stuart for the positive impact he has made since returning. His leadership and energy have been invaluable. I’d also like to thank every member of the band for their hard work and commitment — it’s been a true team effort, and we’re all looking forward to continuing our work together as we prepare for the National Finals.”
The band now looks ahead to the National Finals at the York Barbican in September, alongside fellow Cornish qualifiers Pendennis Brass Falmouth (fourth section), St Pinnock Brass Band (third section) and Roche Brass (first section).
