Bass Trombone – Paul Faraway

Paul started playing the cornet in Bodmin Junior Band at the age of 10 and progressed through to the senior band on second cornet. During this time, he played in two Cornwall Youth band courses under conductors Eric Ball and Albert Chappell. In 1977 he moved to Lostwithiel Youth on solo cornet and then changed to solo trombone after Bodmin School band, which he was a founder member of required trombone players. Paul moved to Mount Charles Band for a couple of years and then rejoined Bodmin moving onto Bass Trombone. The highlight of this spell was his first appearance at the Royal Albert Hall national finals in 1990 plus trips to the Whit Friday march contests.

In 1991 Paul moved to St Austell Band, then onto Lostwithiel Brass ’88 and in 1994 re-joined Mount Charles. This was a very successful time, winning Pontins Prestatyn contest twice, also appearing at the Royal Albert Hall national finals coming 7th. There were other fine performances at Yeovil contest, Spennymoor, the Grand Shield, on television and on radio. Another highlight of this time was an appearance on the Plymouth Theatre Royal stage in the play “Brassed Off”, as well as playing he “acted in a donkey jacket” alongside Steve Huison (from The Full Monty) and other luminaries. In April 2005 Paul re-joined Bodmin Band and then in 2007 moved to St Pinnock Band.

Paul joined us on Bass trombone in November 2018 from Indian Queens Band, where he had been playing since 2015.
